The HOPE foundation Matriculation School is located in the heart of Asia’s largest resettlement colony, Kannagi Nagar in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The slum rehabilitation colony is home to over 100,000 people.
We began our first lesson way back in 2001, in a tiny rented apartment with three teachers and 60 children studying in Kindergarten to 1st grade. In 2011, we moved to a permanent structure built on 17,000 sq. ft. of land in the heart of the Kannagi Nagar colony. This land has been leased out to us by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
The school provides free English medium education to more than 400 children from pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. We have 14 teachers and four supporting staff.
We focus on the all-round development of the child with computer-aided learning, a library, science lab, extra-curricular activities and sports. We have after-school special classes to help slow learners. We work to ensure students attend school regularly. We maintain computerized records of the students.
We regularly counsel our students because they live in a community where problems such as alcoholism, abandonment and domestic violence are common. We also counsel their parents or guardians if required.
We have collaborated with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to provide non-classroom education. Five of our students have won the gold medal in a Standard Aptitude Test conducted by a publishing company.
‘Powering the Possible’ with Dell Inc.
Dell Inc. is one of HOPE foundation’s biggest partners since 2011. The ‘Dell Powering the Possible’ learning grant has made it possible for us to advance youth education initiatives in Chennai, Coimbatore and Hyderabad. With Dell’s support, we have installed three Smart Boards and 50 laptops at HOPE foundation Matriculation School in Chennai. This has been instrumental in developing information & communication technology skills of our teachers and students. Thanks to Dell’s support, our school is now recognised as a 'digi school' impacting the lives of 330 children within the school, 4,000 children indirectly and 670 young people from the community.
In 2016, the theme for the ‘Dell Powering the Possible’ program is ‘Empowering the Next Generation’. We will focus on providing tools, resources, and opportunities for both teachers and students to move beyond basic technology skills and integrate digital literacy at HOPE foundation Matriculation School as well as Government schools affiliated to HOPE foundation in Chennai, Coimbatore and Hyderabad. The aim is to help students acquire critical 21st century learning skills to be globally competitive by empowering the teachers not only with strategies for better classroom management but with the digital literacy needed to develop student skills on par with those with privileged access to education.
"After the sudden demise of my husband, I was no longer able to afford the education of my daughters. But thanks to the HOPE foundation school in Kannagi Nagar, my younger daughter, Rena was able to start school."
