Students of the nursery and primary school at the Center of HOPE in Pudupattinam come from three villages that were devastated by the 2004 tsunami. Today, they have left the trauma of the disaster behind to dream of a better future for them and their families. The English-medium school follows the Montessori system of education and teaches pre-kindergarten to 3rd Standard.
The Center of HOPE also houses a primary health clinic, a village cleaning and waste management program, a community hall and computer training for high school students. The primary health clinic provides healthcare to the 350 families in the village, while the village cleaning and waste management program started in 2005 has helped reduce the prevalence of diarrhea significantly. The community hall was constructed with the support of HR Group Germany and is built to house 500 people at a time. The hall has become the venue for public functions such as marriages, NGO trainings and self-help group meetings.
