Palghar Project: Watershed Management

The Adivasis in Palghar, Maharashtra, practice subsistence farming as their only source of income. They were previously hunter-gatherers but were displaced. They lack the infrastructure to extract water for agrarian practices, solely depending on farming during rainfall. They grow only one crop per year and are exploited by traders due to the lack of transportation. The lack of job opportunities and education, and insufficient crop production lead to poverty. Most of the villagers are employed as security guards and low-level jobs.

In a mammoth effort to create change, the Hope Foundation, in 2023-24 initiated the following as Phase 1 of the watershed management project

  • Livelihood generation
  • Recharge of groundwater
  • Decarbonization project
  • Installation of bore wells & formation of bore well clusters
  • Making large compost pits (waste management pits)
  • Establishing plant nursery and initiating cultivation of various vegetables and crops
  • In bore well clusters and so on
